Surgery and Medical Advances during the Civil War

9:10-9:50 Surgery and Medicine during the American Civil War J.P. Saleeby, M.D.
The lecture will cover aspects of Federal and Confederate medical resources at the start, during and towards the end of the war, surgical techniques and advancements from 1860-1865.  There will be discussion on pharmaceuticals and herbals used, the types of medical conditions treated, the development of the ambulance service, trauma surgery triage and modernization of hospitals.  Statistics on the type of wounds and prognosis of recovery and mortality will be discussed.  Additionally, a few luminaries in battlefield medicine will be highlighted such as Dr. Letterman (USA) and Dr. Moore (CSA) and other, and their contributions to American medicine and surgery.  There will be a brief discussion on hospital trains, artificial limbs and the development of nursing care in the era.
